The Sacrament of Holy Orders consecrates men for a special life of sacramental ministry to the body of Christ, the Church. In Holy Orders priests are consecrated and ordained to preach the gospel, to celebrate the sacraments, and to guide the members of the body of Christ under the authority of the bishop.
Deacons also share in the mission of Christ through the grace of Holy Orders. Their service to the Church is expressed in many ways: assistance at the celebration of the Eucharist, assisting at and blessing marriages, proclaiming of the gospel and preaching, presiding over funerals, baptizing candidates, and in works of service and charity.
